What is animal mediation?

It is the voluntary connection between a person and an animal with the aim of creating positive interactions in order to maintain or improve a state of physical, psychological or social well-being.

It has different objectives: recreational, preventive, educational or therapeutic.

The specificity of animal mediation is based on the triadic relationship between the beneficiaries, the animal mediators

who are selected and trained for animal mediation, and the pair intervening in animal mediation and the referent.

As part of a personal approach, animal mediation helps during periods of stress, anxiety, burnout, problems with self-confidence or managing emotions.

The aim of the sessions:

Animal mediation in practice

What type of support?

I offer personalized support for recreational, educational or therapeutic purposes depending on the audience and their needs.

For which audience?

It is aimed at adults, adolescents, children and elderly people in situations of difficulty, fragility or disability.

For what type of structure?

This support is offered to individuals, associations and various institutions (retirement homes, accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people, centres specialising in follow-up and rehabilitation care, educational medical institutes and medico-psychological centres) who wish to include animal-assisted work in an establishment project.

These can also be partnerships with schools.

Where do the mediation sessions take place?

We offer animal-assisted therapy sessions at the Ânes-relax site, here in Civray.

Simply because it seems essential to us that our animals keep their bearings to be calm when welcoming the public.

If our animals lose their bearings, how can we help the beneficiaries to find some?

It is also the wish to have on site the grooming area, the mediation area, the exercise area and all the equipment needed for sessions with animals such as donkeys.

We welcome you to an extraordinary, secure site, that of Les Âges in Civray where nature excels on the banks of the Charente where water flows peacefully on the edge of the primary forest.

It is indeed a resource center that will contribute and participate in the well-being of the people welcomed.

Our wish is also to allow the public to leave their living space or their host establishment for the duration of a session.

It is to provide him with a break, a breath of air, a new space where life unfolds peacefully which opens up the field of possibilities.

It's discovering animals in their real-life environment, feeding them, seeing nature changing with the seasons (daffodils, wild garlic, walnuts, hazelnuts, wild mint).

This is why it seems important to us to welcome you here on site.

Animal mediators

Who are they?

My animals are donkeys, miniature donkeys, dwarf goats and chickens which are fabulous mediators to help different audiences move towards well-being.

They are educated, prepared and agree to participate in this mediation work. They have a character adapted to animal mediation sessions.

I take care of their well-being on a daily basis,

and they are regularly monitored by the veterinarian.

Bali and Ocean donkeys

and the miniature donkeys Oscar and Obelix

The donkey is endowed with great patience, great calm, a lot of serenity, it brings gentleness to the people who meet it.

Miniature donkeys are very small in size, they are extremely kind and gentle and will bring everyone a great dose of calm and Love, thus filling everyone's gaps.

The donkey helps the most fragile during the sessions by:

  • promoting connections, communication, language
  • promoting positive emotions
  • promoting letting go and calm
  • increasing self-confidence and confidence in others
  • promoting self-esteem and a sense of responsibility
  • stimulating fine and gross motor skills
  • stimulating body balance (carrying)
  • increasing sociability
  • stimulating memory, organization, spatio-temporal orientation
  • promoting empathy and the expression of emotions, giving the desire to learn, to overcome difficulties...

Dwarf goats and chickens are among the mediation animals. They all live on site and have been trained for mediation work.

Dwarf goats Pitou and Rieiki

They will offer a different type of work.

They are much less imposing than large donkeys due to their size, and they have different hair in terms of texture and length.

  • Work on play and the five senses can be easily approached with them.

They are calm, close to humans and like to be touched and caressed for a long time.

  • They have a mischievous nature and play work can be done with them. They love to "play" and have a lot of imagination.
  • They are very greedy and love to eat. Feeding and food can be topics discussed in mediation with goats.
  • They will also allow us to work on the limits for each of the participants as well as on self-affirmation. "How I assert myself", in peace and respect.

The hens Bella, Vive, Mistinguette, Rousse, Crème and Blanche

They may be part of work concerning:

  • letting go and calm. Indeed, the hen has well-defined limits in relation to humans while bringing lightness and joy to everyone.
  • Limits and acceptance can be worked on as part of mediation with the chickens.

These animals love being in contact with humans, they like to walk in their company, while happily searching for insects or nibbling on grass.

The different types of interventions offered

in individual sessions or in small groups

The sessions are offered and conducted according to each beneficiary, their particularities, in consultation with health professionals.

I rely on the tools that I use to lead the sessions and in particular

on sophrology, with work on the body, senses and emotions, as well as the Gestalt therapy approach.

Animal-assisted therapy is part of comprehensive multidisciplinary care for the beneficiary.

INDIVIDUAL discovery and observation sessions

OR IN GROUP

FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES

Observation sessions for children/adolescents or adults allow

to discover animal mediation and to observe the interactions between the facilitator,

the beneficiary and the animal in order to define objectives for future animal mediation sessions.

Discovery sessions are one-off sessions for recreational or preventive purposes.

They are intended to motivate, educate or

“to give people a good time”.

They help improve well-being,

the quality of links, interactions and the quality

of people's lives by increasing

participation in educational and recreational moments. The animal is considered as

the focus of the activity,

not as a mediator.

In both forms that I propose, I insist on the playful and pleasure dimension, because it is without realizing it, by living privileged moments of well-being, that people overcome some of their conscious or unconscious blockages.

Parent/child sessions

in animal mediation

are offered to accompany and support the relationship and the bond, for children/adolescents and a parent.

Individual sessions

or in a group

with a structured program and targeted objectives

FOR EDUCATIONAL OR THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES

These sessions take place regularly, individually or in small groups.

under the supervision of an institutional referent.

In the individual framework:

They target one or more individual objective(s) set in advance with the parents when it comes to sessions with a child, the professionals in charge of the child or the adult concerned. These objectives are followed during regular sessions with a therapeutic and/or educational aim.

A report is written at the end of the session by the speaker.

These sessions are for one person only and last from 45 minutes to 1 hour.

An assessment is necessary before starting the treatment. It is then recommended to commit to a program of at least 6 individual sessions, the sessions should be spaced no more than 15 days apart, in order to observe initial results and initial progress in the beneficiaries.

Within the group: Each participant benefits from an individual program with objectives defined in the short and medium term by the animal mediation facilitator, the referent and the multidisciplinary team.

An evaluation method is proposed following the observation sessions with regular assessments, reports and written follow-ups.

The therapeutic framework is clearly established (place, day, time and frequency of sessions).

The animal is truly considered a mediator between the intervener and the beneficiary.

The animal-assisted therapy practitioner works closely with teams of healthcare professionals and a referent to help achieve objectives in the best possible conditions.

Approaches in session

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is "a state of awareness that results from paying attention, intentionally, in the present moment, without judgment, to the unfolding experience moment by moment."

It allows the development of an ability to relate differently to lived experience.

Exercising mindfulness is close to what Gestalt therapy means by awareness: it is about centering oneself, grounding oneself, exercising one's vigilance, awakening to oneself and to the world using all one's senses.

Take the time to sit or pose in the right outfit, in the right form and do nothing except slip into full attention to the coming and going of the breath.

Mindfulness helps to shift from doing mode to being mode. Being mode helps to move away from ruminations and open up to simple happiness and inner calm.

It is a strengthening tool to be more emotionally stable, to better enjoy existence, to be fully aware of what is experienced here and now.

Connecting to the present moment allows a step back that happens naturally. The feeling of what is being experienced becomes clearer with more discernment. It allows the mind to be soothed and another to be established.

relationship between the world “from within” and the world “from

out ".

Sophrology

Sophrology is a psychocorporeal approach designed by Professor Alfonso Caycédo who was a doctor and neuropsychiatrist. It is inspired by Western techniques and knowledge (relaxation, neuroscience, psychology, hypnosis, etc.) and Eastern practices (yoga, meditation, Zen). Sophrology connects us to our body by listening to our bodily sensations. It helps to soothe the mind, release muscular tension and regulate emotional balance.

This practice, while allowing you to calm down, allows you to approach life in a more positive and serene way.

It is a gentle method which contributes to the overall balance of the individual.

The practice of sophrology allows, over the course of the sessions, to reestablish the link and balance between the body and the mind.

This rediscovered connection allows you to regain self-esteem and improve your quality of presence to yourself and to others.

The more sophrology is practiced, the more it provides means of help and action to maintain stability and the necessary distance when faced with certain destabilizing and stressful situations in life.

The 5 senses and feelings

The 5 senses are an integral part of our daily lives: smelling, tasting, listening, seeing and touching consciously allows us to return to calm and free ourselves from tension. They allow us to return to ourselves, to our interiority and to return to calm.

Practiced with active bodily listening, they open doors to meet and experience the relational and social world differently, they change the feeling and perception of a situation and help to take a different look at oneself and the environment.

The educational use of the senses constitutes in itself a method of relaxation which allows one to modify one's states of consciousness.

This work helps to enrich the sensory capacities of a wide audience (children, adolescents, adults, elderly people, etc.) with varied specificities (sensory disabilities, concentration and memorization difficulties, social isolation, etc.), and in different intervention contexts (school and educational, associative, social and reception, therapeutic and hospital, retirement homes, etc.).

The link and the animal at the heart of the link

The animal will help create a bond and well-being by taking the time, in a secure, caring environment and with respect for everyone.

Unique moments of sharing, exchanges, and experience, this work allows us to develop the ability to recreate links, to trust and to rely on resource people.

It is learning a new way of being connected to gain freedom and be able to make positive choices for oneself and break with isolation.

What are the benefits of these approaches?
